Although the Steelers lost to the Packers in last year's Super Bowl, it looks like the team will have their Hollywood ending after all. Over the weekend, players and fans filmed a scene for the most anticipated movie of 2012, Christopher Nolan's final Batman installment, "The Dark Knight Rises."
Ben Roethlisberger, Hines Ward, Willie Colon, Maurkice Pouncey, Mike Wallace, Heath Miller, Aaron Smith, Ryan Clark, Troy Polamalu, James Farrior and Casey Hampton were among the Steeler players who took part in the scene, along with more than 10,000 fans at Heinz Field, which was transformed to the home stadium of the "Gothan Rogues."
Even former coach Bill Cowher returned to the sidelines for the first time since the 2006 season and Kevin Colbert, the Steelers director of football operations, joined him as an assistant coach for the Gotham Rogues.
Without giving away too much info about the football game scene, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that during the football scenes, Batman vehicles Tumblers rolled onto the field and special effects teams set off quite a few explosives.
So how did this cameo come about? Roethlisberger has become close with Thomas Tull, the film's executive producer who joined the Steelers ownership group two years ago. Tull helped influence the shooting of the movie in Pittsburgh and he's been trying to get the Steelers involved.
"I'm kind of getting everybody together," Roethlisberger told the Post-Gazette. "I heard it's going to be a neat thing at the stadium. I don't think it will be a big part, it's not like we're chasing Batman down or anything. It's something neat that in 10 years or 20 years we can tell our kids we were in a movie. Thomas does movies big and I'm sure it will be a big-time movie and something fun to be part of."
Below is video of fly over of Heinz Field to see how it was transformed for the "Dark Knight Rises" filming and check out Deadspin for a few fan photos from the set.
In addition, here is a fight between Batman (Christian Bale) and villain Bane (Tom Hardy) shot after the football scene at Heinz Field on Saturday.
